Darkness Within

This is a chalk drawing done by Bob Upgren, a motivational speaker and (as you can see) an amazing chalk artist, done within 15 minutes at a school assembly held today.
When we were called down to hear him speak, I think I can speak for a majority of my classmates when I say that we were not expecting the assembly he had for us. He had the perfect combination of humor and seriousness. He spoke to us about how everyone has a special ‘thing’ (he called it “the art inside you”) and that while things may come and try to change you and take this thing away from you, you should keep fighting.
At the end of the speaker, he asked us to write on the board some of these things that prevent you from discovering this art within you. Of course, it took a while, and a couple of brave souls, but eventually the board was covered in these things. Among the list (sorry, I wasn’t able to take a picture of the list itself) were things such as stereotypes, expectations, bullying, pain, and self disgust, things I’m sure most people on tumblr (myself included) can relate to.
However, over all these things, he drew the amazing picture above (sorry for the poor quality, it was taken with my ipod), proving that with perseverance and hope, your talent, the art within you, will shine and overcome that negativity.
I don’t really know why I felt the need to share this story, but I do believe that this is an important lesson, especially to a lot of people on tumblr. Don’t give up, and don’t stop fighting. Your art will shine through sooner or later.
